Tanya Stephens is an inspiration. She sings powerful, at times playful, songs, mostly about relationships and social issues, with universal musical appeal. On June 10th, 2012, she played to a full house in Berkeley, California. A dense ring of women pressed firmly against the stage responding joyously with cheers and laughter. She engaged all in the club, alternately chiding, teasing, or advising.
Opening for Tanya was Mystic Man, a young Haitian who lives in the Bay Area and is gaining a steady fan base with his roots reggae and tight band. If you have not heard of him yet, you will.
Backstage, Tanya schooled Mystic Man about women in reggae. He wants more female artists on lineups. She doesn’t think that gender should matter, only talent. It’s an on-going dialogue in the reggae world. But for sure, Tanya is one of the top artists of the day, whether male or female, and has earned her rightful place on festivals and stages around the world.
Give thanks to DJ Smokey and The Shattuck Down Low for a great show.
