It’s been a long wait, but on November 3, 2012, Jamaica’s King of Dancehall finally made it to the West Coast, performing to a packed house of adoring fans at Oakland’s New Karibbean City. Women surrounded the lip of the stage, pressing in and reaching out to Beenie Man. Several were invited on stage to show their dance moves as he observed in close detail. With his typical sense of humor and prowess, he basked in the vibes. The set took on a “call and response” feel, with Beenie pausing and smiling as he listened to the audience sing on. “I’m drinking rum…” was followed by hundreds of voices shouting “and Redbull”. Far from Jamaica, dancehall is very much alive and vibrant.
