The second concert in the monthly series celebrating Reggae Month organized by the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA) was held on Wednesday February 13th. That this was also Ash Wednesday which is considered a national/religious holiday in Jamaica allowed for the hosting of two concerts, one during the day and one in the evening.
The first was held in the afternoon between the hours of 2pm-6pm and was titled ‘Reggae Praise’, as it featured several of Jamaica’s young and talented upcoming gospel artistes. Together they delivered powerful spiritual performances. Newcomer ‘The Explosive’ showed his talent and soon had the audience singing along with him.
The evening event started at approximately 7pm and was titled ‘Voices’. This featured some of Jamaica’s finest turning out to grace the stage. Among the performersof the night were master percussionist Bongo Herman whose talent has been featured on the albums of several international reggae artistes including Jimmy Cliff, and with the Abyssinians on their big hit on ‘Satta Massa Gana’. Upcoming artiste Shemiaiah and Hempress Sativa also made a significant impression with the patrons at Emancipation Park.
Pam Hall’s return to the stage was appreciated by the large crowd, as was the popular AJ Brown. Singer Mikey Spice who has not performed in Jamaica for a number of years delivered several of his past hits while showing that he has not lost his touch. Junior Reid’s performance would have been incomplete had he not done his popular hits such as ‘One Blood’ and ‘Haffi Fit’.
The show was brought to a close by the Captain of the Big Ship Recording Studio, Freddie McGregor, who as he consistently does, had the audiencenot only singing along to his well known hits but dancing throughout his performance.
