Originally set for March 17th, but being postponed on two occasions, the Dennis Brown Concert was finally held downtown Kingston by the Victoria Pier on March 17th. The event which marked the 58th birthday of Dennis Emmanuel Brown (The Crown Prince of Reggae) was organized by The Dennis Brown Foundation and Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA).
Although free to the public, the proceeds from the concert which came by way of donations are slated to assist in the provision of scholarships for students from Central Branch Primary, which Dennis Brown attended in his earlier years.
The caliber of artistes who turned out to perform in tribute to Dennis Brown was a testament to the high esteem in which he continues to be held. The performers included Beres Hammond, Jah Cure, Mary Isaacs and Chuck Fender. Bongo Herman and Dean Fraser represented the instrumentalists from the reggae genre, while Toots and the Maytals, The Heptones, Big Youth, Ken Boothe, Niney The Observer a personal friend and producer of several Dennis Brown hits all brought the respect of the old school charge to the fore.
It was however the performance of the younger generation of performers like Jah9, Alaine, Que Que, Asante Amen, Duane Stephenson and the rapidly rising Chronixx (who got the best the crowd had to offer), that reminded all those present of the positive impact Dennis Brown had made on the future of the music.
