Junior Reid Biography

Junior Reid is a conscious reggae and dancehall artist. He was born on June 3, 1965 in Kingston, Jamaica and grew up in the notorious Waterhouse district.

He recorded his first single Know Myself at 14 for his late friend Hugh Mundell, while Jamaica knew big troubles. Then he formed his own band, Voice of Progress, and released the album called Mini Bus Driver (out on Negus Roots in 1982). In the early 80’s, Junior Reid took part of Sugar Minott’s Youth Promotion Crew, and recorded several singles for Minott’s label. He also worked with producer King Jammy. The result was a number of hit singles as Boom Shack A Lack, Higgler Move, Bank Clerk or Foreign Man. In 1985, he joined Black Uhuru to replace Michael Rose. As Rose or Don Carlos, Junior Reid’s voice and gimmicks are similar, and associated as «Waterhouse style» (from the name of the district they come from). With Black Uhuru, Reid released the 1986 album Brutal. Two years later, Junior Reid left the band and returned to a solo career, recording again for King Jammy and others producers. He set up his own studio and label JR Recording in the 90’s and produced many artists until today. From his beginning, Junior Reid released more than 15 albums including critically acclamed selfproduced albums One Blood (1989) and Rasta Government (2002). Today, he’s still producing, recording upcoming artists, and also tours with One Blood Family, alongside his two sons.
