The Twelve Tribes of Israel celebrated the 45th anniversary of the founding of their organization at their headquarters on Monday located at 81-83 Hope Road in Kingston. Several patrons turned up to dine and dance to the sounds of Rastafari. This was no ordinary anniversary celebration as the survival of the organization is testament to the commitment of its members who faced strong societal opposition when they formed.
Coordinated by Sangie Davis, a veteran producer and songwriter, the event featured selectors such as Ilawi from the Jah Love & Armageddon Sound system, Lee’s Unlimited and Bess FM’s radio announcer and selector Gary I. Patrons were encouraged to wear white and many of complied as the general attire was either full white or beautiful creations in the Rastafarian colours of red, green and gold.
Among the performers where Nyabinghi chanter Ras Michael and The Sons of Negus, Sister Nelly from Dominica, Ana from Japan who performed Johnny Osbourne’s Truth & Rights. Willie Williams from Studio Fame who has not performed in Jamaica for over 30 years was a pleasant surprise for the patrons. Guitarist Dalton Brownie sang Dennis Brown’s Created by the Father; Bob Andy chose classics from his vast repertoire, delivering I’ve Got to Go Back Home and Fire Burning. It was Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus who brought the audience to their feet with Birds in The Treetop and the ever popular and fitting Rasta Man Chant. The show was closed by Tarrus Riley and his Black Soil Band after which the crowd where treated to more music by the sound systems present.
