Out now on BBE records is a new album from Brian May… no that one… but the artist, producer, riddim creator alternatively known as Beam Up, titled “Innerstand”. I’ve only had a chance to hear a trio of tracks from this album but from the strength of what I’ve heard the other 10 certainly deserve greater exploration for that is what it does as it takes you on a musical journey dedicated to the great Osborne ‘King Tubby’ Ruddock "… for repeatedly showing there are no rules".
‘Hanabi Dub’ has all the hallmarks of Tubby’s spacey, bassy, dubs supplemented by vocals from Terrence Alfonso Bowry a UK-born Canadian national whose experience has mostly been gained on Shanghai’s jazz and blues scene and his languid delivery compliments this well. ‘Dive’ is another sparse riddim filled with pockets of brass and features Katya Tasheva a multilingual vocalist who has previously worked with Berlin based band RotFront, while the very traditional roots sounding ‘No Chains’, has French-Guyanan rastaman Jornick Joelick waxing lyrical about freedom from mental and physical slavery.
With such a diverse group of vocalists and the much travelled May at the helm this sounds like it has all the makings of a very eclectic, high quality dubwise excursion.
