Formed in 1999 and based on the south coast of England, Dubheart have a classic roots and dub sound on this set, produced by Fullness with a line-up that is augmented by The Brassika Horns (from London ska band Chainska Brassika), so that Burning Spear’s classic 70s sound certainly came to mind more than once.
This release is in the manner of a showcase set, with each track being followed by its nicely heavy dub version. Vocals are warm throughout, lyrics are conscious, and melodies and riddims (yes, real riddims) memorable – and the two extended mixes that close the set are well worth anyone’s money.
Besides Spear, think maybe Dennis Brown and certainly Scientist for the dubs, and then maybe Augustus Pablo at his deepest on Zion Road Dub – these guys know what they want and how to do it, and the resulting album will be one of my releases of the year. It will take something extra special to top this album.
Cool Under Pressure was released on March 16th, 2018 and is available from Karnatone Records on LP, CD and digital download.
