Austrian producers House Of Riddim, the outfit behind Marlene Johnson, have released eight cuts on their Conquerer Rhythm on 7” and download format. They are Emergency Love by Everton Blender, Revelation Time by Fitta Warri, Shed No Tears by Jah Mason, Long Time by Ras Mac Bean, The Truth by Natty King, Africa by Anthony Cruz, Give Me Weed by Conrad Crystal and Sunshine from Uton Green.

Fans of Marlene Johnson will be familiar with Conquerer from the Anthony Cruz cut, one of the strongest tracks on her debut album My Type O Smoove. The rhythm’s bass line pattern is similar to Augustus Pablo’s King Tubby Meets The Rockers and rests on tough drumming with a distinctive echo on every fourth snare. The result bears all the hallmarks of the House Of Riddim band - clean but unquestionably “roots” arrangements with a melodic radio friendly hook.

It’s such a solid foundation that it’s hard to pick a winner from the various sides on offer. You can judge for yourself by listening to the megamix on the right hand side of the page…
