Serbia Unveils Bob Marley Statue

The first monument in Europe to reggae icon Bob Marley

"Bob Marley - fighter for freedom armed with a guitar", that is the inscription carried at the base of the statue of Bob Marley unveiled in Serbia last Saturday. The two-metre-high statue is designed to promote peace and tolerance in the country and in the whole region. It was unveiled in the Serbian village of Banatski Sokolac during a rock festival. The work, created by Croatian artist Davor Dukic, is the first European monument dedicated to the Jamaican legend, who died in 1981. Thus far, the reaction to the statue has not been as strong as the response to Chris Gonzalez' 1983 work, which was pelted with rocks and fruit by angry reggae fans.
