Legendary Jamaican singer Alton Ellis is died this morning. He suffered from a cancer and had been admitted to hosiptal at end of 2007 for treatment of cancer of the lymph glands. Few days ago, rumours about Alton Ellis death started and circulated. His family had dispelled them. This time, it’s confirmed. One of the legendary golden voices of Jamaican music has truly passed away.
Born in 1944 in Kingston, Alton Ellis aka Mr soul of Jamaica began his career in the late 50’s. He begun as a part of the duo Alton & Eddie, and then started to record for Duke Reid and his Treasure Isle label, alongside The Flames ( with his his brother Leslie Ellis, David "Baby G" Gordon and Winston Jarrett). It would be hard to summarize the 40 years of career of this pioneer of Ska and Rocksteady music. An artist appreciated by all the generations. In 2006, he was inducted into the International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA) Hall of Fame.
A true reggae legend is gone. R.I.P.
