Curtis Lynch and Necessary Mayhem have released their own revamp of Tristan Palmer and Jah Thomas’ Joker Smoker rhythm. Preserving the insistent horn stab of the original’s 12-inch mix and Palmer’s honeyed chorus refrain, this four track selection (three vocals and one version) is top bud from stalk to head.
Sugary Statian vocalist Ziggi sparks up first with Ganja Smoke (In The Air) describing a police herb raid on his premises (we can assume he exceeded the Dutch limit for personal use).
Mayhem mainstay Mr Williamz then breathes lyrical wit and life into what can be a fairly stale smelling subject. During No Cigarette, he childishly challenges us to compare spliff-length with him and berates people who smoke and can’t roll. Ipswich mc YT’s cut bears the potentially unappealing title of Credit Crunch, but his timing and flow make this yet another big tune.
Everyone’s a winner with this deliberately deferential take on a classic backing track. The Joker Smoker rhythm is out now on 2 vinyl 7” and for exclusive digital download from the Necessary Mayhem site. A new LP from the crew is said to be on the way…
